The Essentials of Biological Anthropology: Understanding Human Evolution, Genetics and Diversity

A field of science, biological anthropology studies both the behavioral and biological aspects of human beings, along with their close relatives, non-human primates. It investigates the biological and cultural influences that shape humans’ evolutionary history and explores the physical and genetic diversity of humans. This area of anthropology can be divided into four areas: paleoanthropology; primatology; human genetics and biocultural adapt (Haviland, 2020). Paleoanthropology studies the history and evolution of human species. The fossil records of human ancestors are included as well as archaeological locations where these were discovered. The evidence of human behavior over time is also included. Primatology, which is the study and research of non-human primates like monkeys or apes, can also be called primateology. It covers their anatomy, physiology, behavior, and ecology (Relethford & Harpending, 2016). Human genetics refers to the study of the human genome and its genetic diversity. It examines genetic variations within individuals and their evolution over time. Biocultural adaptation examines how people have evolved to adapt to changing environments and the cultural, biological, and psychological processes that influence human behavior. Cont…
