Many communities are becoming more concerned about groundwater contamination. This is an environmental problem that could have serious health effects. Groundwater contamination can occur when groundwater is contaminated with chemicals, bacteria or other pollutants. Groundwater contamination can be caused by a number of factors, including agricultural activities, industrial activity, or natural sources. Runoff from urban areas can cause pollution to the groundwater supply. The contamination of groundwater could have severe consequences both for human health and that of the environment. For example, exposure to contaminated water can lead to a range of illnesses, including gastrointestinal and respiratory disorders, as well as neurological and reproductive problems (Gierthy & Sparling, 2017). Long-term health consequences can also be caused by exposure to pollutants, such as birth defects and cancer. Groundwater contamination can also lead to water quality declines and render it unfit for drinking. It is possible to take steps to reduce contamination and protect the groundwater supply. The steps taken include decreasing the runoff from the groundwater supply and using appropriate storage and disposal techniques for hazardous substances, as well monitoring the water quality.
