The Electron Transport Chain and OTP
Electron transport chains (ETC) are a collection of biochemical reactions in the cells’ mitochondrial membrane. It is responsible for electron transfer from one molecule, then to the next, as well as the conversion of electrons into oxygen. These electrons can be used to create a proton gradient along the membrane. This is then used to stimulate the synthesis and use of ATP. This is known as Oxidative Phosphorylation (OxPhos). OxPhos, the primary source of ATP inside a cell is OxPhos. This complex process involves electron transfer from NADH to FADH2 and then to the electron transportation chain. The electron transfer chain also transfers electrons to oxygen. It uses the electron transfer energy to move protons through the membrane and create a proton-gradient. The proton gradient then drives the production of ATP. Studies have shown that OxPhos is highly controlled and is dependent upon the availability and concentration of cofactors and energy substrates.
