What are Phenotypes and Genetypes? Exploring Reproductive Technologies, and Other Sex-Linked Traits
Although terms such as genotypes and phenotypes are common in genetics research, many are unfamiliar with their meaning. The characteristics that are observable in an organism’s physical appearance, behavior, and other traits are called phenotypes (Paris et. al., 2022). This is determined from the particular combination of genes an organism has. It’s called the genotype. It is the genotype which determines the type. There are many medical procedures that can be used to help couples or individuals conceive or increase their chances of having a healthy pregnancy. A fertility medication can be used to stimulate ovulation, regulate hormones and increase chances of conception. Another technology is artificial insemination, wherein sperm is injected directly into a woman’s uterus in order to conceive a child (Wang et al., 2022). In vitro fertilization (IVF) is another technology that involves retrieving eggs from a woman and combining them with sperm in a lab in order to create a fertilized embryo, which is then implanted in the woman’s uterus.
