Self-fertilization
Plants and animals can self-fertilize to produce offspring from their own gametes. Self-pollination is also called autopollination or autogamy. (Lloyd (2016) If the individual is unable to find a suitable mate for themselves, then self-fertilization is possible (Li, et al.2020). This is a good way to increase the likelihood of successful reproduction for species who live in low-resource environments and have few potential mates (Harris’ 2020). By preventing genetic loss due to mating of closely related individuals, self-fertilization may also be beneficial in perpetuating a species (Li and al. 2020).
